One of my all-time favourite wedding venues – it certainly deserves its own place on my website to talk about how stunning it is! If you’re already planning a wedding at Crowcombe Court, or just looking for gorgeous wedding venues in Somerset, this will be a good read for you.
About Crowcombe Court – This incredible wedding venue in Taunton, Somerset
An exclusive-use wedding venue in Somerset, this beautiful Grade 1 listed Georgian Manor House boasts a rich history, stunning grounds across 7 acres, and the most gorgeous rooms to celebrate your wedding day in style.
Crowcombe Court History
The Manor of Crowcombe Biccombe or Carew was acquired in 1568 by Thomas Carew. Since the 13th century, a manor house has existed on the grounds, and in 1676, John Carew laid a court and gardens out around the house. The estate was later inherited by Thomas Carew, John Carew’s great-grandson, in 1719. By 1724, he had the old manor house demolished to make way for something far grander.
The design and build of a new mansion – Crowcombe Court – was entrusted to Thomas Parker, with work commencing that same year. However, when Thomas Carew discovered that Parker had been pinching coins from the wreckage of the old house, he dismissed him! Building works were eventually completed by Nathaniel Ireson in 1739. Funded by the sale of six manors, the final cost was around £6,000 (almost £1.4m in today’s money). New formal terraces and gardens were set around the house, with a walled garden established to the south between the church and the property.
Thomas Carew passed away in 1766, and Crowcombe Court was inherited by his son-in-law, James Bernard. In the late 18th century, James removed the formal gardens in favour of informal lawns and laid out pathways connecting a group of follies beside a stream.
This gorgeous Georgian building stayed in the Carew family for over 200 years, until the 1960s. In the 1970s, Brympton School briefly occupied the building. Shortly after, the main house became a nursing home, with the service wings sold into separate ownership.
By 1999, the house reverted to private ownership, and much-needed restoration work began. In 2011, Dave and Kate Kenyon purchased the property and undertook further extensive restorations, particularly to the overgrown gardens, which now flourish with greenery and wildlife.
Since 2019, Crowcombe Court has been owned by The Ghilchrist Collection and has been used exclusively as a wedding venue.
